Vertigo and TMJ

Your TMJs are positioned directly in front of your ears. When the TMJs are irritated or inflamed, this can extend into the surrounding areas.

Within the ear canal, there are small crystals attached to a membrane and fluid which shifts about as we move our heads. As these crystals sense the changes in fluid movement, information is sent back to the brain from each ear to help us understand where our head is positioned in space and to maintain our balance.

Vertigo occurs when these crystals are displaced and float around in the fluid, or when the surrounding nerves become inflamed and send misinformation to the brain. This results in dizziness, nausea, and sometimes ringing in the ears.

At the Jaw Clinic we have Physiotherapists who have specialist training in the treatment of Vertigo.
