Hypermobility and TMJ

Hypermobility can be a cause of Jaw or TMJ symptoms.

In particular, HMJS (Hypermobility Joint Syndrome) and EDS (Ehlers- Danlos Syndrome)

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a genetic condition that affects connective tissue within the body, particularly skin, joints and the walls of blood vessels. Individuals with EDS present with increased flexibility, which can increase their risk of joint dislocations.

Daily activities such as yawning or chewing cause the mouth to open wide. In patients with EDS, these end-range movements can result in spontaneous dislocation of the TMJ, leading to pain, limited mouth opening range, and clicking or grating sensations.

We are experienced in supporting patients with EDS to manage both acute and chronic jaw pain. Importantly, we understand that EDS is a condition that impacts your whole body and take a holistic approach to manage your condition in a way that optimises your function and minimises pain.
